Psionics

“Power does not remove the need for judgment. It makes errors more expensive.”

— Sister Abigail

You have probably been told that psionics is a gift.

I would be careful with that word.

A gift is something you receive.

Psionics is something you open yourself to.

Every living mind touches Modal Space. Most people never notice. Some catch glimpses. A few learn to reach back.

Those few are called psions.

The ability can save lives. It can move what should not move, reveal what cannot normally be seen, reach another mind, alter the body, or place you somewhere you were not a moment before.

It can also injure you, change you, expose you, attract attention, and convince you that something impossible must therefore be true.

Those are not the same thing.

What Psionics Is

Psionics is the ability of a living consciousness to perceive Modal Space and impose a possible state upon physical reality.

That sounds complicated.

In practice, ask a simpler question:

What do you want reality to accept as true?

How much of reality must be contradicted to make that happen?

That difference is called Modal Distance.

Moving a loose object across a table is one thing.

Lifting a person is another.

Moving someone who is fighting you is harder.

Teleporting yourself across a room you can clearly see is not the same as appearing inside a moving vessel you have never visited.

Reality has inertia.

So do people.

The Five Talents

Psionic ability is organized into five standard Talents.

Telepathy

Telepathy concerns minds.

Thoughts. Emotion. Identity. Contact.

A telepath may sense another mind, send a message without speaking, establish a voluntary Mind Link, read surface thoughts, or protect against mental intrusion.

Do not mistake access for truth.

People think contradictory things.

People rehearse conversations that never happen.

People remember badly.

People lie to themselves before they ever lie to you.

A thought is not testimony.

A memory is not a recording.

And consent to hear one thought is not consent to open the rest of someone’s mind.

Clairvoyance

Clairvoyance concerns perception beyond ordinary sensory access.

A clairvoyant may sense what lies beyond a wall, locate a known person or object, perceive distant events, detect psionic residue, or catch an impression of what may happen next.

That last part causes trouble.

The future is not a place waiting for you to look at it.

You are looking at possibilities.

Several contradictory visions may all have been accurate when you saw them.

Write down what you actually perceived before you begin deciding what it means.

Awareness

Awareness concerns the psion’s own body.

Breathing. Pain. Fatigue. Temperature. Reflexes. Metabolism. Healing.

It can keep you functioning when another person would collapse.

It can slow bleeding, suppress pain, conserve oxygen, resist environmental stress, or accelerate processes the body already knows how to perform.

But remember this:

Not feeling the injury is not the same thing as not being injured.

If you have been shot, see a medic.

If you have poisoned yourself, see a medic.

If your Awareness tells you everything is fine while blood is filling your boot, see a medic.

Preferably quickly.

Telekinesis

Telekinesis concerns force.

Movement. Pressure. Momentum. Balance.

It can lift, pull, hold, rotate, throw, catch, brace, manipulate, or redirect.

That does not make you an engineer.

If you do not understand the machine, moving its parts remotely does not improve your understanding.

If you do not know where the load is going when you lift a collapsed beam, you may simply move the collapse onto someone else.

Power does not replace competence.

Teleportation

Teleportation changes location without crossing the space between.

It is one of the most useful psionic abilities.

It is also one of the least forgiving.

Location is more than coordinates.

It includes:

  • orientation;
  • velocity;
  • atmosphere;
  • pressure;
  • temperature;
  • gravity;
  • occupancy;
  • relative motion.

A destination being empty a moment ago does not mean it is empty now.

A deck moving beneath your feet is not stationary simply because it feels that way.

Know where you are going.

Know what is there.

And if you do not know, be very certain the reason for going is worth the uncertainty.

Spirit and Psionic Strength

A psion’s raw capacity comes from Spirit.

Maximum PSI = Spirit × 3

PSI represents the amount of controlled psionic capacity available to you.

Your Maximum PSI is your normal capacity.

Your Current PSI is how much remains.

Using psionics reduces Current PSI.

Rest restores it.

Running low matters.

The less controlled capacity you have left, the harder later psionic work becomes.

Do not confuse having power remaining with being unharmed.

That brings us to the three things every psion should learn to distinguish.

PSI, Strain, and Exposure

Write this somewhere you can see it.

PSI

PSI is what you spend.

Strain

Strain is what it does to you now.

Exposure

Exposure is what it changes about you.

PSI is capacity.

Strain is injury.

Exposure is adaptation.

You can spend PSI without suffering serious injury.

You can suffer Strain while PSI remains.

You can recover both and still discover that Modal Space left something behind.

That last part matters.

Strain

Strain is immediate physiological or cognitive damage caused by psionic exertion.

It may begin with something small.

A headache.

Trembling.

A nosebleed.

Words becoming difficult.

A sound that does not stop when the room becomes quiet.

Push farther and the damage becomes harder to ignore.

Memory can fail.

Identity can become unstable.

The body can collapse.

A psion can Burn Out.

If that happens, recovery may not mean returning to the person you were before.

Exposure

Exposure is different.

Exposure is persistent change.

Repeated or severe interaction with Modal Space can alter how you perceive, remember, think, behave, or even appear.

You may develop habits that keep you stable.

You may begin associating thoughts with colors or smells.

You may record every conversation because you no longer trust memory alone.

You may find mirrors uncomfortable.

You may answer questions before people finish asking them.

You may change physically.

None of this tells you whether someone is good, evil, holy, corrupted, chosen, cursed, or anything else people will be tempted to claim.

Exposure is not a morality scale.

It means you have changed.

That is all anyone actually knows.

Contact

Now we reach the part most manuals try to make clinical.

Some patterns encountered through Modal Space behave as though they are intelligent.

They communicate.

They imitate.

They remember.

They bargain.

They deceive.

What are they?

I do not know.

Neither does anyone who has earned my trust.

That does not mean you know nothing.

There are warning signs.

Pay attention when:

  • a voice uses the identity of someone dead or absent;
  • a symbol begins appearing repeatedly;
  • the same dream returns;
  • unrelated records begin contradicting one another;
  • something demands secrecy;
  • something demands isolation;
  • something demands worship;
  • something insists only it can be trusted;
  • withdrawal causes anger or punishment;
  • attention is rewarded;
  • memories appear that you cannot place;
  • time goes missing;
  • trusted people tell you that your behavior has changed.

And especially pay attention when your first instinct becomes:

I should not tell anyone about this.

That is often the moment when you most need to tell someone.

Identity Anchors

Every practicing psion should have Identity Anchors.

An Identity Anchor is something tied to your life outside the current psionic event.

It may be:

  • a person;
  • a journal;
  • a recorded memory;
  • a name;
  • a routine;
  • a prayer;
  • a scent;
  • a biometric record;
  • an old photograph;
  • an object whose history is independently known.

The anchor does not need to be dramatic.

It needs to be real.

When your memory says one thing and the record says another, preserve both.

When the voice says your oldest friend has betrayed you, speak to your friend.

When you are uncertain whether a thought began inside your mind, stop treating certainty as evidence.

Dangerous Practice

There is one rule I would make impossible to misunderstand.

Never work alone during dangerous psionic practice.

Use an observer.

Use a recorder.

Establish a withdrawal signal.

Set your maximum PSI expenditure before you begin.

Decide what will stop the exercise before you are the person arguing that it should continue.

Give someone else authority to end it.

And write down what happened before sleep, sedation, further Contact, or discussion begins changing the memory.

When Contact Goes Wrong

If you believe you have made Contact:

  1. Stop deliberate psionic use unless someone will die if you do.
  2. State your name.
  3. State where you are.
  4. State the date.
  5. State who is with you.
  6. State what you were trying to do.
  7. Break fixation.
  8. Establish a Shield if you can.
  9. Contact someone you trust.
  10. Record the event before interpreting it.
  11. Check ordinary medical and environmental causes.
  12. Withdraw.

If you cannot tell whether a thought is yours, do not obey it merely because it feels important.

Urgency is not authority.

Familiarity is not authority.

Knowledge is not authority.

Power is not authority.

Shields and Resistance

People are not passive objects.

An unwilling person can resist psionic intrusion.

Training helps.

Identity helps.

Other psions can help.

Technology can help.

A Shield can make contact harder or prevent weaker forms of intrusion.

But Shields are not walls against reality itself.

A mental Shield does not stop a wrench thrown with Telekinesis.

It does not stop vacuum.

It does not stop fire.

It does not guarantee that everything dangerous in Modal Space operates the way you expect.

Use the right protection for the right threat.

Psionics and Law

Psionic law changes from world to world.

You may encounter:

  • registration;
  • licensing;
  • restrictions;
  • supervision;
  • prohibited techniques;
  • classified programs;
  • mandatory treatment;
  • detention;
  • institutional recruitment.

Possessing psionic ability is not automatically the same thing as committing an offense.

Using it may be.

Before acting, ask:

What is the law here?

Who has jurisdiction?

What am I licensed to do?

What record will exist afterward?

Who gets to decide whether my explanation is believed?

If those questions sound bureaucratic, good.

The person arresting you will probably have forms.

Callings

Some psions develop what are called Callings.

A Calling is an obligation so central to identity that it appears to become a stable structure through which psionic power can operate.

Some believe this is psychological reconstruction.

Some call it collective belief.

Some call it Modal resonance.

Some call it divine.

None of those interpretations has earned universal certainty.

What matters in practice is that a Calling is not a title.

It is an obligation.

It must cost something.

It must constrain behavior.

It must exist in action.

Paladins

A Paladin is someone whose enacted oath has become a stable source or structure of psionic power.

The oath is not proven by words.

It is proven by what the person does when keeping the oath becomes difficult.

A Paladin must know:

  • what they protect;
  • what they are required to do;
  • what they must never do;
  • what law and consent still bind them;
  • what anchors their identity;
  • what failure costs;
  • whether repair is possible.

Power does not prove divine approval.

An oath does not erase consent.

And believing yourself righteous is not the same thing as being right.

The Rule I Want You to Remember

You will forget formulas.

You will forget classifications.

You will forget which instructor taught you which exercise.

Remember this instead:

State what you want to happen.

Understand how much reality must change.

Know what it will cost.

Know who can be harmed.

Record what actually happened.

And when something from the other side tells you that none of those precautions are necessary anymore—
that is when you need them most.
