A tabletop roleplaying game in development
Red-Shift Needs You.
RED-SHIFT is growing into an independent science-fiction roleplaying game and community. We need players, writers, testers, creators, and supporters willing to help us build it.
Join the Red Shift
What are you waiting for?
RED-SHIFT needs people willing to actually use it.
Play the game. Test the rules. Break the systems. Tell me what works, what fails, what feels slow, and what needs to change.
Write something. Build something. Create a ship, a character, a city, an adventure, a corporation, a weapon, a career, or something I never thought of.
The Imperium is waiting for you.
Players
Create characters, take contracts, explore the setting, and tell us what makes the game worth coming back to.
Testers
Push the rules until something breaks. Find unclear procedures, balance problems, edge cases, and unnecessary complexity.
Writers & Creators
Build adventures, locations, factions, characters, ships, equipment, histories, and new corners of the universe.
Supporters
Help cover the cost of development, artwork, hosting, tools, and everything required to keep RED-SHIFT growing.
Play it.
Break it.
Build it.
More than a decade in the making
It started as a campaign.
RED-SHIFT began as a Traveller campaign more than a decade ago.
Then the house rules started accumulating.
New systems replaced old ones. The campaign became a setting. The setting developed its own ideas, characters, institutions, technology, economies, conflicts, and identity.
Eventually, it was no longer really Traveller.
It had become RED-SHIFT.
Today, RED-SHIFT is being developed as its own independent tabletop roleplaying game: a grounded science-fiction game about ordinary, capable people trying to survive, work, and make a difference inside systems much larger than themselves.
The question behind the universe
What if we never fix it?
RED-SHIFT is interested in more than spaceships and distant worlds.
It is also about institutions.
My experience working inside large systems taught me that an institution can be broken, many of the people working inside it can know it is broken, and the institution can keep operating anyway.
The problem is rarely just bad people or bad intentions.
Systems accumulate rules, incentives, bureaucracies, traditions, budgets, habits, and constituencies. Eventually, maintaining the system can become easier than changing it.
RED-SHIFT takes that problem into the far future.
What happens when institutions survive centuries—or millennia— after the reasons for creating them have disappeared?
What happens when nobody remembers why the rules exist, but everyone still has to live under them?
The Imperium is not a prediction.
It is an extrapolation.
The Game
Capable people.
Dangerous choices.
Persistent consequences.
You are capable, not invulnerable. Skill matters, but bad decisions, injuries, and bad luck still matter.
The ship has bills. Fuel, maintenance, repairs, contracts, debt, and resources shape what you can actually do.
Distance matters. Travel takes time. Information is imperfect. Help may be very far away.
The world remembers. Injuries, debts, reputations, broken contracts, institutional records, favors, enemies, and mistakes can follow you.
Make RED-SHIFT your own
Don't just read the universe.
Add something to it.
RED-SHIFT is being built for people to create with, not simply consume.
Build a place I never imagined. Create a character nobody expected. Write an adventure that changes how somebody sees the setting.
The public-use and licensing framework is still being developed, so commercial-use permissions are not final yet. The long-term goal is to make RED-SHIFT a universe that other people can meaningfully build upon.
Need something?
Ask.
Need a rule?
A ship? A planet? A weapon? A career? A hazard? A city? A strange piece of equipment nobody has designed yet?
Send me the idea.
I want RED-SHIFT to grow through the questions people ask and the things people actually want to use at the table.
Help me build a game we actually want to play.
Support RED-SHIFT
Help keep it growing.
RED-SHIFT is a passion project.
Donations help support the website, artwork, development tools, testing materials, and continued expansion of the game and its online community.
If you like what is being built here, you can help bring more of it to life.
Your berth is waiting
RED-SHIFT needs players,
testers, writers, builders,
and troublemakers.
There is an entire future waiting to be explored, tested, questioned, rebuilt, and occasionally broken.
