Skills & Specialties
Skills describe what a character has learned to do. Characteristics describe the personal capability the character brings to the attempt. The same Skill can therefore be paired with different Characteristics depending on how the character approaches the problem.
The Skill answers: “What are you trained to do?”
The Characteristic answers: “How are you doing it?”
The Characteristic pairings shown below are common applications, not fixed
combinations. The Referee may use another Characteristic when the character's
declared approach makes it appropriate.

Characteristic Ratings & Dice Modifiers
RED-SHIFT Characteristics normally range from 2 to 12. The Characteristic rating determines the Dice Modifier, or DM, applied when that Characteristic is used for a task.
When a Characteristic applies to a task, use its DM rather than adding the full Characteristic rating.
